Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is an ambiphilic bile acid. TUDCA is formed in the liver by conjugation of deoxycholate with taurine. It is a taurine conjugate derived from ursoodeoxycholic acid. Humans are found to have trace amounts of TUDCA, but a much higher content of TUDCA can be found in animals bile, such as bear, chicken etc .While, bile helps with our digestion, assisting the body in breaking down fats into fatty acids making them easier for our digestive tract to take in. A buildup of too many lipophilic bile acids in the liver such as Chenodeoxycholic acid or deoxycholic acid can cause toxic effects like cell death, leading to cholestasis. Since TUDCA is amphipathic, it is able to antagonistically compete with these harmful bile acids in the liver, displacing them from the liver, lowering their concentration and harmful effects. TUDCA supplement was shown to reduce the effects of apoptosis on the liver, function as a treatment of cirrhosis and promote the overall production of bile acid in the liver.

A 1998 study found TDUCA to be more effective at decreasing aminotransferase serum levels than placebo with progressive improvement of hepatitis.

Insulin is necessary for blood glucose obtained from food to enter cells but sometimes, often genetically, cells become immune to its signals. When this happens cells fail to absorb sufficient glucose from the blood, leading to a state of high blood sugar called hyperglycemia.
