After the mice were given nicotinamide riboside (NR) in their drinking water daily for three months, researchers found that NR supplement can significantly increase the level of NAD + in the mouse brain . Boosting NAD+ – with the help of NR – helped to restore neuronal plasticity, which is vital to learning and recall. They also indicated that this supplement can restore the body’s activity and cognitive ability quickly. Furthermore, NR also reduces anxiety in mice, which is a common problem in humans with Alzheimer’s disease.
At present, NAD+ is superior to other anti-dementia drugs, since it protects the brain in many different ways. In research newly published in FASEB J, the journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, researchers found that nicotinamide riboside was even more effective than NAD+ in protecting against excitotoxicity. Excitotoxity, in which nerve cells in the brain become overstimulated, can set the stage for neurodegenerative disease. The research team concluded that “interventions that bolster neuronal NAD+ levels therefore have therapeutic potential for Alzheimer’s disease” – a firm endorsement of NR’s potential. Therefore , the reaserchers concluded that Nicotinamide ribose prevents alzheimer disease
Lastly , nicotinamide riboside (NR) can be used as a dietary supplement with 125-500mg dose daily .
