What is Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester
Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), which an active component of propolis from honeybee hives, is the ester of caffeic acid and phenethyl alcohol. It is known to have anti-mitogenic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and Immunomodulatory properties .
CAPE is a specific inhibitor of the nuclear transcription factor, NF-κB. It has been shown to significantly suppress the Lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism during inflammation. Also , CAPE inhibits HIV-1 integrase, and inhibits proliferation of transformed cells as well. It induces apoptosis in transformed fibroblasts, and interferes with EGF signal transduction affecting both protein kinase C and Ornithine Decarboxylase activity.
